Social Activities in Playa del Carmen

All students are encouraged to make the most of their time in Playa del Carmen by participating in guided excursions and activities offered by the college.
Various events are offered by the college on a weekly basis; excursions to the ancient Mayan cities of Tulum and Chichen Itza, the island of Cozumel, famous for its coral reefs and marine life; or one of the regions many superb nature reserves.  All of which gives a cultural context for the Spanish language, enables students to get to know each other and most importantly is fun!

An example of a two-week cultural programme:
Week One
Monday: Mexican film
Tuesday: Salsa dance class
Wednesday: Mexican arts & crafts
Friday: Cooking class
Saturday: Full day excursion (optional, not included in the course fees)

Week Two
Monday: Mexican film (different every week)
Tuesday: Merengue dance class
Wednesday: Mexican arts and crafts
Friday: Cooking class

The college will also help students plan their own social activities if they want to do something extra like go to a movie, listen to live music, or go trekking.

Activities outside of the college:
For those of you that love to go shopping, you can take a ferry to Cozumel where you will find lots more shops. Conzumel is also world-class for diving and snorkelling for those of you who love water sports.
Throughout Playa there are caves and cenotesto discover (a cenote being a hole in the ground filled with spring-water). You can swim; snorkel, and dive in the cenotes and the experience and views are sure to be memorable. If you are not lying on the beach, you might want to try snorkelling, diving, fishing or sailing. The worlds second largest reef system runs along the coastline of Playa del Carmen and therefore provides the perfect opportunity to experience these activities. Fun water filled day can be spent in Xcaret Eco-Archaeological Park; you can swim with dolphins or navigate the underground rivers.
There is also plenty of wildlife to see here, not to mention the botanical garden with an orchid farm and the caves full of mammals and bats to view. Xel-Ha Lagoon is a great place to go snorkelling in the brackish lagoon waters carved out of natural limestone formations. If you do go, don’t miss the floating bridge and nature walks.
For those of you that love golf you can enjoy the 18 hole Playacar Club de Golf.
Xaman-Ha Aviary is a spectacular bird-watching complex that houses hundreds of birds in a tropical forest setting - it should not be left off your “Things to see” list.

Just west of Playa del Carmen enroute to Merida is the “Chichen-Itza” Mayan Ruins. Famous structures include the temple of Kukulcan and the Observatory. This is one tourist attraction not to be missed. More Mayan ruins can be found at the Tulum Mayan Ruins. These are the splendid ruins of a Mayan walled city on a high bluff next to the Caribbean Sea. This site is famous for the fresco paintings and the “Diving God”.
