Japanese language school - short courses building
Building Two:
Students on short term language courses, such as the Standard Course, University Student course or Discovery Programme will be based here. The school building also hosts private tuition courses and is home to the Online Centre offices, production base and the recording studio and the language school's radio station. The facilites are also offered to local community groups, and the distance learning theatre and classrooms in the building are also used for teacher training courses.
There are:
12 classrooms - 8 larger classrooms, 4 suitable for small group study, all have wide desks in a u-shpaed formation for good class interaction
two computer labs - for self-study purposes out of class or to get on line to communicate with friends and family. They are open late in the evening on week days and even on Saturdays. Unrestricted on line access is available. The operating systems are Japanese and a range of educational materials are available to support self-learning. All students on campus receive password access to the Online Center, and can also receive their own browser based email address (also a free service). In addition to self-learning, the lab is also used as a classroom when teaching students how to use Japanese language software and when assisting students to make their own Japanese language homepages. Furthermore, as well as using school supplied PC's, students are able to connect their own computers to the network via LAN cards
tv room - a large room, serving as the main lounge for students on short courses. The room has a cable television and a table-tennis (ping-pong) table, a photocopying machine for student use (coin operated). The main function of the room is to provide a rest area for students to use during the breaks between lessons and after hours. There is plenty of seating, but also room to move around.
The main wall serves as a giant noticeboard - in addition to class notices, there is plenty of information about parties and local events, tourist information, recommended restaurants etc. Much of the information is provided by the students themselves. it is air-conditioned.
student reception & support - the office is directly adjoining the tv room and within 30 meters of all classrooms - you have very easy access to after hours support. For short term course students, this office is the main point of contact outside class hours. If you have questions regarding your studies, are having difficulty with some content and require clarifications or explanations, then you can approach the staff at any time. The office is open plan and provides the staff with a relaxed environment for planning lessons and developing teaching materials. Most consultations take place in the classrooms, so that the white boards and internet access can be used to advantage. Students also visit the office to obtain additional study materials. Sometimes the textbook that you are using in class may not be sufficient in detail for your needs. Everybody who learns a language such as Japanese will discover that some things are easy, some more difficult, and that this will differ from person to person. If there is a particular point of grammar or other problem that you are encountering difficulties with, then you can usually obtain additional help and study materials from the student reception and support office
the theatre - fFor most students, the first time they visit the theatre will be for Japanese language proficiency testing and for new students orientation at the beginning of a course. The maximum capacity of the theatre is only 60 students, and the seating structure is tiered (4 rows only) so that all students have a clear and unobstructed view of both the instructor and the big screen. In many lessons, microphones are not even required as students are never more than 8 meters from the instructor. Low gradient ramps have been built into the design to provide barrier free access to students with wheelchairs. All desks have access for LAN and power outlets for laptop computers. Every students' desk is wide enough to hold both computers/electronic aids and have sufficient space for notepads, books and other resources. A wide range of teaching technologies can be used. Video projection is mostly from ceiling units. At the rear of the theatre there is even a film projection booth - in addition to lectures and conferences, the theatre can be used as a movie cinema
the hall - used for most of the ceremonies, parties and other major events at the Japanese language school and is a key meeting area for school life. The hall can easily accommodate over 150 people and can host a larger number of people if used in conjunction with the lawn outside. Infrastructure in the hall includes a kitchen that is used during parties and includes the facilities required for a small bar. The hall is well ventilated and has heating/airconditioning for year round use. The surface area is large enough for a dance floor and the parties held here are a good opportunity for meeting Japanese people in a relaxed atmosphere
