Methodology

Choose from two Japanese Language Course options:

Long-term Japanese Courses
Offering an academic focus, where you cover the four core Japanese language skills, with emphasis on written and reading skills. You will study the three alphabets; the kana-hiragana (the simplest, consisting of only 46 characters), katakana (for words borrowed for other languages i.e. English) and kanji (based on the Chinese characters).
They do not use Romaji (the Japanese word for the Western alphabet) in any classes. Course work includes; written and grammar exercises and conversation classes based around role plays, discussions and correct usage of Japanese. Reading and writing are taught to a high standard and private study of kanji and grammar is essential. The grammar and kanji covered is suitable for both the Japanese Language Proficiency Tests, according to class level and for everyday usage. The Academic Course curriculum is structured on 10 theoretical language levels, with a natural duration of between six to eight weeks at each level.

Short-term Japanese Courses
Shorter courses are communication based. Written work is covered but there is less emphasis on kanji study (and none at all for Beginners). Students do work on katakana and kana-hiragana but the key aim is to cover the basic grammar required to converse in and understand everyday Japanese, according to class level. New grammar items are studied in context through conversation and listening. Later lessons use this material in various exercises, role-plays etc. Reading is covered but is treated as a secondary objective. The Shorter Japanese Course curriculum is structured on 7 theoretical language levels, with a natural duration of between two and four weeks at each level.

In reality CESA students chose to attend a short course or a longer "Academic Term" programmes, according to their linguistic goals, personal wishes and time constraints.
