The Japanese Language School offers two group programme options described under methodology.
Long-term Japanese Courses:
Japanese Academic Terms
(Academic Term/Year with or without Student Visa)
20 group Japanese lessons per week
plus further workshop sessions from week 3 onwards, each term
Language Course duration: 12, 24, 36, 48 + weeks
Max 15 people per class
Minimum age: 18yrs
An intensive and academic Japanese language course covering all aspects of the Japanese language, ideally suited to students needing in-depth knowledge prior to, during or post their University studies. Also suitable for all JLPT preparation.
Without Student Visa: UK, US & EU citizens can follow a 12 or 24 week Japanese course.
With Student Visa: UK, US & EU citizens can follow a 24 wk or longer course. If you want to apply for a Student Visa you must apply for an OCTOBER or APRIL start date. Deadline for application for OCTOBER courses = early May & for APRIL start date = early November. Please discuss details with CESA.
If you are of a different nationality, please discuss Visa requirements with CESA staff.
Japanese AT Plus Courses
20 group lessons plus additional Private lessons
Language Course duration: 12, 24, 36, 48 + weeks
Max 15 people per class
Minimum age : 18 yrs
Build on the Academic Term Courses, with extra private tuition classes to address areas of language weakness or develop specific skills. Also suitable for all JLPT preparation.
Short-term Japanese Courses:
Standard Japanese Course
23 group Japanese lessons per week
Language Course duration: 2 to 12 weeks (year round)
Max 15 people per class
Minimum age : 18yrs
5 lessons a day Mon/Thurs, 09.00 - 14.30hrs & 3 classes on Friday 09.00 to 11.50hrs
The Japanese course is purely communication orientated, ideal for those who wish to study key grammar and conversation skills of the language, but don't require in-depth study. Primarily aimed at beginners to intermediate level students. If there are 7 or less students in one of the intermediate classes - Japanese lessons are reduced to 15 daily classes (09.00 to 11.50hrs) plus Mon/Thurs lunch classes with tutor/s, meals included (11.50 to 13.30hrs)
Culture & Japanese Course
Small group tuition (max 15 students per class)
Japanese Language course duration : 2 to 12 weeks duration (year round)
Minimum age : 18 yrs
Detailed schedule of cultural seminars, workshops, field trips and tours
This is NOT an intensive lJapanese anguage course, but rather a language study & culture programme, that allows you to experience Japan, whilst improving (or learning basic Japanese skills from scratch). In addition to language study (generally 2 or 3 days per week) students can also learn Kabuki dance, discover the Tea Ceremony, Japanese Cooking, Origami & Calligraphy AND participate in a sake tasting seminar, with sake brewers, sommeliers and sake fans! In additional there are a range of field trips covering diverse interests such as Sumo wrestling & Cormorant fishing.
Intensive Japanese Course
30 group Japanese lessons per week, including 1 private lesson with advisor, 1 workshop, 1 computer assisted study session & 2 semi-private lessons on Friday PM in addition to core group course.
Japanese Language Course duration: 6, 9 & 12 weeks duration (April/November)
Max 8 people per class
Minimum age : 18yrs
A more intensive, short term Japanese language course option. Suitable for JLPT preparation, ideal for JLPT evel 4 students, looking to achieve Level 3 by the end of the course.
Japanese University Student Course
30 group Japanese lessons per week, including 1 private lesson with advisor, 1 workshop, 1 computer assisted study session & 2 semi-private lessons on Friday PM.
Language Course duration: 7 or 9 weeks duration (summer only)
Max 8 people per class
Minimum age : 18 yrs
Timetable: 09.00 to 15.50hrs, Mon/Fri plus cultural weekend tours (tour fees included)
Aimed at Undergraduate & Graduate students wishing to boost their Japanese language skills over the summer holidays. Very popular programme, limited course dates - so becomes fully booked - please book early.
Designed to enhance the communication skills of students who have previously studied Japanese (with a few dates available for complete beginners). Students on non-beginner start dates MUST have JLPT level 4 and be able to read & write hiragana & katakana and be able to read the kanji on the requirement list. The aim being to bring these students up to JLPT level 3 standard, by the end of their Japanese course.
Japan Discovery Course
Visit different regions of Japan and explore famous landmarks with this guided group (mini bus based) course. Gain insights into hidden Japan, that would otherwise not be possible. Tour duration varies from 2 to 12 days and landmarks visited are chosen according to the season and duration of the tour. This programme is only offered in-conjunction with a Japanese language Course.
