About San Giovanni

San Giovanni is a small and delightful, medieval town in the heart of Tuscany, with a population of 17,000 inhabitants. Surrounded by small Chianti villages, old churches and farms, San Giovanni remains apart from the stresses of traffic and tourism. Here you can still savour the quieter pace of Italian daily life and yet be within easy reach of the rest of Tuscany.

There are some excellent restaurants, shops and major fashion houses boutiques in town. Everywhere in San Giovanni you can find good food stores, bakeries, cafes and bars.

It is an ideal environment for quieter, cultural immersion. The local people are welcoming and patient, and are happy to help visitors practice their Italian. There are public tennis courts, a famous abbey and the thermal spas close by.

San Giovanni is also within ready reach of all that is best in Tuscany, making trips to Florence, Lucca or San Gimignano, easy day trips. It is also surrounded by fabulous countryside, you can hike in nearby mountains, cycle to places such as the small lake of Santa Barabara, or visit the picturesque hilltop village of Loro Ciuffenna.

You can find delicious local products such as cheese, extra virgin olive oil, wine and traditional cured meats in the local shops of San Giovanni. Each Saturday morning many people from the surrounding towns flock to San Giovanni for the colourful and characteristic street market. This offers wonderful opportunities to buy fresh fruit and vegetables, on-site roasted chickens, pork, traditional tripe-filled rolls, as well as affordable clothes, shoes, utensils, dress materials, plants and much more.
