Social Activities

All students are encouraged to make the most of their time in Athens by participating in the guided excursions and activities offered by the college. Students are advised of college arranged activities on the first day of their course.

A sample week’s social programme:
Monday: Practice in the computer room
Tuesday: Watch a Greek film at the college
Wednesday: Practice in the computer room
Thursday: College arranged evening meal in a traditional restaurant
Friday: Visit to a museum
Saturday: A day trip to Aegina or one of the other nearby islands
Sunday: Visit a local market followed by leisurely restaurant lunch in the sunshine

Activities outside of college:
Athen’s museums hold treasures of great significance, The National Archaeological Museum houses the Mask of Agamemnon amongst its Mycenaean Antiquities as well as pottery and jewellery from Troy. The “must sees” if you are culturally moved are the Acropolis, the Parthenon, the Ancient Agora (market), the octagonal marble “Tower of Winds” and Lykavittos Hill (great panoramic views of Athens, the mountains and across to Salamis and Aegina islands, pollution permitting). For shopping Athens is a paradise for tourist kitsch and gold and silver jewellery, Kolonaki is a modern street with chic boutiques, coffee houses and restaurants or sample the famous flea market, on “Plateia Monastirakiou”. The market is alive with cafes, street sellers and musicians and it is at its noisy best on Sunday mornings. Food is taken very seriously and there are an endless array of restaurants to chose from in Athens, satisfying every style, taste and budget.

For those who want to explore Athen’s nightlife (expect to see plenty of people, hundreds of bars, traffic jams at 1am, lights and noise). We recommend the bars and restaurants in the area of Pangrati/Mets and Kolonaki. There are several clubs and nightclubs around the city where you can party until 6 AM, should you feel inclined.

Students make their own entertainment as a rule. They can gather information from the free newspapers available everywhere, from the poster flyers in the city or from the college bulletin board. The college staff are always happy to help with information (if you run short on ideas).
