About Athens

Athens offers the perfect setting for language students who wish to explore the urban heart of Greece whilst improving their Greek language skills. Athens, home to 4.5 million inhabitants is the capital of Greece, set on the mainland between three mountains and it is a city of fabulous contrasts. Famed for the magnificence of its ancient monuments, its many bars and restaurants, world-renowned museums in its central districts, Athens appeals to everyone!

Athenians live at a fast pace year round and in particular love their nightlife, from the latest clubs to local tavernas, bars and restaurants. With a mild winter temperature that only occasionally drops below freezing (although in 2002 there was snow) and a summer temperature that can reach into the 40’soC, Athens is at is best during the warm Spring and long Autumn months.

The central restaurants, hotels, tavernas and shops around the Syntagma Square area, are within 10 minutes by bus from the college. Recently the city enjoying a new building period as infrastructure was developed prior to the 2004 Olympics. The public transport system in Athens has improved greatly due to the new metro system, although the city is also well served by buses and cable trolley buses. However the 1.7 million cars crammed into the city streets still make driving and taxi rides a trial (and cycling a no no).

Historically Athens has been there and done it. By 1400BC it was a powerful Mycenaean city, around 500 BC Athens saw a golden age, when the Acropolis was built and Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides lived. It was invaded by the Turks in 1456, and remained in Turkish hands for 400 years, until the War of Independence in the 1820s.

The city's nearby port, Piraeus is the gateway to a wonderful array of islands. Piraeus is home to a flotilla of ferries, hydrofoils and catamarans that can take you on short hops to nearby islands such as Aegina and Hydra, or much further afield.
