About Hyeres
Hyeres lies within easy reach of Nice and Marseilles on the Mediterranean coast. It has a temperate climate all year round and is the perfect course location for those who wish to get away from the bustle of city life, whatever their age. Home to some 50,000 people, it has a busy summer season, when the weather can be very hot!
The old town rises up the hill to the old 12c. Fortress and is made up of a maze of picturesque narrow streets, paved with thick cobblestones. With its medieval architecture and Provencal pastel shutters and doors, it is a pleasure to explore. The Place Massillon is another landmark of the town, a large open square surrounded by shops and home to various café-restaurants and the historic 12th century Tower of Saint-Blaise. Hyeres has a range of open-air markets, the Provencal market on Saturday mornings and additional markets on Tuesday and Thursdays every week.
The town itself is separated from the coastal Marina and beaches, by the salt flats, which are a wildlife preserve. The peninsular is home to over 20 km of great beaches, various camping sites and holiday apartments and a large Marina with a wide variety of cafes and bars for you to discover. You can always find a beach out of the wind, ideal for sun bathing (in the summer), or in the wind for sailing and wind surfing (all year round).
Hyeres is a friendly town, with a good range of restaurants and cafes to explore. Language students have greatly enjoyed this delightful town for many years, but it is undoubtedly the warmer, summer months that attract students, of all ages.
Local Specialities
The area has a wealth of fabulous local dishes to explore. From the well-known dish of "ratatouille", the local fish stew speciality "bouillabaisse" and "tapenade" with capers and black olive based paste eaten with bread or vegetables as an hors d'oeuvre. Hyeres is a horticultural centre and provides a rich variety of vegetables and herbs to delight and inspire any chef. The provencal sun provides magnificent fruit, strawberries for 7 months of the year, melons, peaches, apricots and figs. Another favourite that is typical of the region is an apéritif, known as "orange wine".
