Your First Day @ College

Whilst each college has it’s own method of organising the first day of a language course, we can offer a few general guidelines to give you an idea of what you’re walking into.  Full and specific information is always provided, once you’ve enrolled.  However if in any doubt, please ask.

You will need to sit an oral and written language  placement test (it’s not as scary as it sounds) on the first day (generally Monday) so that you are placed in the correct group for your language level.  Occasionally colleges ask students to complete a language test in advance of arrival.  If this is the case, we’ll let you know, once you’ve enrolled.

Language classes are then held from Monday to Friday each week (generally speaking lessons will start on Tuesday on the first week, except for Beginners who have lessons on the Monday).  Once you have successfully completed your course you will receive a college certificate attesting to your level of proficiency in the language, this will also show the duration and style of language course you attended.

Can I get a language qualification?

Yes!  But it’s not compulsory. Which, as many CESA language students have just come off the academic treadmill in the UK, is nice to know. The language colleges issue Course Certificates proving your attendance and the level of language ability you attained.

In addition state recognised exams are offered to language students studying French, Spanish, German, Russian and Japanese.  Additionally Italian language colleges prepare students for Italian University recognised exams.  Many language colleges abroad offer language students specific exam preparation courses.

Please ask for the exam fact sheets for your language of interest.

What accommodation is offered?

All of the language colleges abroad will arrange accommodation for the duration of your course. Generally there are set arrival and departure dates (these have been specified throughout the individual course details) and the colleges prefer you to keep to these whenever possible. Accommodation costs are quoted in the language course PDFs and the Course Finder, for the current year.

Usually, you will stay with local hosts in a private household (with many more opportunities to learn and practice your language). On many courses you can also choose from college residence or studio apartment options. If you prefer, we can arrange hotel accommodation. Read More »

What are the language teachers like?

All language teachers are native speakers, trained to teach their own language to foreign nationals. They will ONLY speak in the target language in class.

Their aim is to make your language learning experience fun. That is not to say that it won’t involve some hard work on your part. They are there to encourage you to talk and participate in class as much as you can. They will answer your language questions and listen to your concerns. Read More »
